How to Choose the Right Blank T-Shirt (Cotton, Blends & Ring-Spun)
By The Apparel Team ·
Not all blank t-shirts are the same. Two shirts can look identical on a screen and feel completely different in your hands — one crisp and structured, the other soft and drapey. The difference comes down to fabric, weight, and how the yarn is spun. Here’s what actually matters.
Cotton, blends, and tri-blends
100% cotton is the classic choice: breathable, comfortable, and it takes both screen printing and embroidery well. It’s the safe default for most t-shirts, event shirts, and everyday wear.
Cotton/poly blends (often 50/50 or 65/35) mix in polyester for a softer feel, less shrinkage, and better wrinkle resistance. They hold their shape wash after wash, which makes them popular for uniforms and shirts that see heavy use.
Tri-blends add rayon to the mix for an extra-soft, vintage, lightweight drape. They’re a favourite for retail-style and fashion tees — just note the heathered look and stretch can shift how a print sits, so they suit softer designs.
Fabric weight
Weight is measured in ounces per square yard (oz/yd²) and tells you how substantial a shirt feels.
- Lightweight (around 4.2–4.5 oz): soft and fashion-forward, great for a retail feel.
- Mid-weight (around 5–5.5 oz): the versatile all-rounder — durable enough for daily wear, comfortable in most climates.
- Heavyweight (6 oz and up): structured and rugged, built to last through repeated washing and hard use.
If you’re not sure, mid-weight is the dependable middle ground for most orders.
What “ring-spun” means
You’ll see ring-spun and combed cotton on a lot of spec sheets, and it’s worth understanding. Standard (open-end) cotton is spun quickly and feels a bit coarser. Ring-spun cotton twists and thins the fibres into a finer, stronger, smoother yarn — so the shirt feels softer and gives printers a cleaner surface for crisp detail. Combed cotton goes a step further, removing short fibres for an even smoother finish.
In short: ring-spun and combed cotton cost a little more, but they feel noticeably nicer and print better. For a premium hand-feel, they’re worth it.
Matching the shirt to the job
- Everyday and events: mid-weight 100% cotton or a comfortable blend.
- Retail or fashion: lightweight ring-spun or a tri-blend for softness and drape.
- Uniforms and heavy use: a cotton/poly blend or heavyweight cotton for durability.
- Active wear: consider moisture-wicking activewear fabrics instead of cotton.
